Does Your Company Need a Safety Management System?
If you’re operating in the maritime industry, maintaining safety and compliance is not just a necessity—it's a responsibility. That's why having a robust Safety Management System (SMS) in place is crucial. At TBS Safety, we’ve developed a comprehensive Towing Safety Management System (TSMS) that adheres to the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, ensuring full compliance with Subchapter M and AWO RCP regulations.
Safety at Sea and Beyond
The primary goal of Subchapter M is to ensure safety at sea, prevent human injury or loss of life, and protect the environment, especially our marine ecosystems, from damage. TBS Safety’s TSMS is designed to help you achieve these objectives while keeping your operation efficient and compliant with all relevant rules and regulations.
Our mission is simple: to assist you in operating a safe and efficient company that adheres to all safety and regulatory standards. Whether you're looking to assess your current operations or need help implementing a tailored TSMS for your office and vessels, TBS Safety is here to guide you every step of the way.
Building a Culture of Safety
At TBS Safety, we believe that safety starts with commitment. We provide a comprehensive training program that helps promote a culture of safety and environmental management. Our team will work with you to develop a safety culture that extends throughout your organization. Through training and audits, we’ll also help ensure that your team continues to improve and adapt, keeping safety and compliance at the forefront of your operations.
What is a Towing Safety Management System?
A TSMS is a customized document that details the safest and most effective ways to perform operations both on board vessels and ashore. It is designed to address all aspects of safety and environmental protection—ensuring the crew, equipment, and environment are protected at all times.
The key to a TSMS is risk assessment. Mariners conduct these assessments every day as part of their job, and the TSMS formalizes this process. It evaluates the risks associated with various exposures and helps determine whether these risks require more rigorous management or regulation.
Managing Risk with the TSMS
The TSMS starts with identifying and assessing the risks involved in your operations, such as what to do in the event of a grounding, equipment malfunction, or environmental hazard. The system covers the procedures for safe use of equipment, including deck machinery, tools, and ladders, ensuring that every action taken on board or ashore is carefully considered to minimize potential harm.
Commitment to Safety and Environmental Protection
The TSMS is built on a foundation of commitment. Your company must commit to operating safely and with environmental awareness. Roles and responsibilities are clearly defined, and the authority of the Master is acknowledged. Additionally, a maintenance program is implemented to ensure equipment is maintained responsibly, avoiding costly and dangerous failures.
To ensure the system works as intended, regular internal and external audits are conducted, and the results are used to refine and improve the system continually.
Why Choose TBS?
At TBS, we’ve developed TSMS plans for both coastal and inland companies. Our commitment to safety and compliance is reflected in our own practices, where we consistently assess and improve our performance. This continuous improvement is a core part of who we are, and it’s something we live for.
Our TSMS is second to none. It has been vetted by two class societies and two Third-Party Organizations (TPOs), ensuring that it meets Sub M, AWO RCP, and the ISM Code. We’ve used our system in AWO RCP audits and achieved outstanding results. In 2017 alone, our system successfully passed five AWO RCP audits, and it has continued to evolve over time, refining policies, procedures, and forms in the field.
Our customers are integral to the evolution of the TSMS. Their feedback and use of the system in real-world settings make it a dynamic tool that continuously improves in functionality and effectiveness.
